Preview pane in apps other than Finder

I am not sure about the correct terminology and apologise if someone else has already asked this question.

I recently switched from Windows to MacOS (Sonoma) and one thing I miss a lot is the preview pane when browsing and opening files.

Yes, I know the preview pane is available in Finder, but Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. do not use Finder when opening files directly from within the application. It is not productive to leave the application, Illustrator for example, to go to Finder and browse to the relevant folder just to preview the file and then open it in Illustrator.

Does anyone know of a setting or workaround that I may have missed?

Thank you PRP_53, Quick Look is definitely an option and it works in all of my Adobe applications by simply tapping the space bar.

Thank you, I am happy to be back! My first Apple experience was way back in 1991 on a monochrome Mac with a very, very small screen. I then went freelance in 1993 and switched to Window PCs because they were cheaper, but I've always wanted to return to Apple.

There will definitely be more questions and I am grateful to the various Community contributors who have helped me over the years with their expertise and knowledge, either directly or indirectly by answering someone else's question.

Made the Full switch to OSX / macOS somewhere in 2007

Still pock around on Refurb Lenovo with Win 10 just for fun

Then, sometimes experiment of various Distros on Linux

Don't hate me, but from a looks point of view, I prefer the flat design of Windows 10. It "feels" neater than macOS's more retro-style shaded buttons and icons, and floating dock. Hopefully Apple will add options like setting the background colour of the dock independently, and/or removing rounded corners to theme settings in future updates, but that would just be nice-to-haves.
