My Apple TV remote app has directional arrows (up, down, left & right). How can I set up my wife’s app to do the same. I did it once before on my devices but cannot remember how. Thanks!

The setting for using directions buttons already does turn off swiping gestures for this particular software remote.
To configure a similar behavior for the physical Siri Remote, go to Settings on the Apple TV box: Settings﹥Remote and Devices﹥[ʀᴇᴍᴏᴛᴇ] Clickpad﹥Click Only.
