Apple Remote iOS app for Apple TV on Macbook

I’ve walked through the steps in the support article ad nauseam. I can’t get Apple TV app on Mac to discover my iPhone remote (it doesn’t show up in the sidebar) and I’m getting irritated. The Mac recognizes my iPhone for other apps. This seems like it should be a fairly simple feature given the devices have so much wireless date sharing capability. I’ve turned on every sharing permission I can find. Very frustrating.

Your post is a bit confusing.

The Apple TV remote widget and app on iOS is for controlling Apple TV boxes connected to a TV. It is not meant as a way to control the Apple TV app on a Mac at all. Your Mac is never going to see your iPhone as a remote at all. And the Apple TV Remote App will not show your Mac as an option

You can use the iTunes Remote App to control the Apple TV app on a Mac however, but the Mac does not see the iPhone in this case either. Everything is done from the iTunes Remote app. You need to have enabled Home Sharing on the Mac and in Settings in the iTunes Remote App, and it will then show all available libraries including Apple TV app libraries.

Both the iPhone, and the Mac, need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for this to work.

The iTunes remote, should just present the available libraries as shown above. No code required, and no real setup other than enabling Home Sharing.

If your Mac is using a different Apple ID for Home sharing than your iPhone then it may require the code setup, but that only works for Apple music.

Make sure Home Sharing is correctly set up on your Mac as explained above, and the libraries should then simply appear on the iPhone.

You can also verify the Home sharing Apple ID on the iPhone is the same as the Mac in Settings ➜ Music ➜ Home Sharing on the iPhone, and System Settings ➜ General ➜ Sharing ➜ Media Sharing ➜ (i) ➜ Home Sharing.
