Accents on Macbook

Dear all,

I used to be able to do accents such as é, ä, ö, ü, etc. by keep pressing the respective letter on my Mac Keyboard. Since a few days this feature has stopped working and instead it will just repeat the letter until I stop pressing it.

What can I do in order to restore that function?

Accents on vowels showing automatically when I double press e/o/a My laptop (2023 M2 Mac Air Sonoma 14.4.1 OS) auto types a vowel with an accent if I double type the letters e/o/a as if it's set to French or Vietnamese. I have to tap the letter a third time to allow me to type keep, for example, instead of kép. Very frustrating. I'm certain the language is set to US. Help?
