MacBook not asking for password after waking from "shut down."

I have MacBook Pro 2019, Ventura 13.5.1.

At home, I've set Apple System Settings/Lock Screen to ">8 hrs "... which works fine, as it should: lid down > 8 hrs, password is required, excellent.

HOWEVER, big problem: whenever I've actually "shut down" my computer - say, to go somewhere - when I then re-open the lid, I am NOT asked for a password. No matter how many hours/days it's been. The computer wakes up when the lid opens, and presto everything's just right there in plain view. No password required.

Not good.

What do I need to do to make sure that when this computer wakes up - after being purposefully "shut down" - it requires a password?

More details:

I have read the earlier responses to this question (several years old) - which gave instructions for going to Apple Settings/Security and Privacy/General, and then selecting Disable Automatic Login.

But I don't have a "Security and Privacy" setting; I have a "Privacy and Security" setting, and it doesn't have a General section, and it doesn't mention log-in/lock screen options at all.

There's a separate General section, but it has nothing about those topics either.

Instead, in my System Settings menu, I have a stand-alone Lock Screen section, but this doesn't include a "Disable Automatic Log-in" option (as mentioned in the older solutions to this problem).

It does have the setting for "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off," with a drop-down menu, but the clock options range from "Immediately" up to "8 hrs," and then there's a "Never."

The thing is, when I "shut down" my computer, I'm trying for extra security (and to save battery). Instead, this step seems to temporarily erase my "Require Password" selection (8 hrs) - to a default of "Never," on wakeup (how does that make any sense?) - in effect "shut down" just makes it so that anyone who steals my laptop can just open the lid and sail away, with all my everything right there on a platter.

(btw, aside from skipping the first "awakening," the Lock Screen resets to functioning as selected)

Does anyone have a workaround to suggest?

Thanks so much!

BK

In the System Settings, check under Users & Groups for a setting to Automatically login and turn it off if it is set to login as a specific user.

For Automatic Login, from the Off Position, would require two things to configured on this computer

One = 1 User Account on this computer

Two = FileVault Turned OFF

How to log in automatically to a Mac user account

With FileVault turned ON , this would further Protect both the computer and your Personal Files

Just remember to make a Recovery Key and keep it is a safe place

If one can not find or remember the Password, Not even Apple can help retrieve you data

Thank you @PRP_53, for the info on updates. (I've been seeing a notification in System Settings for ages, but what it was most obviously displaying was an offer to "upGRADE" - to Sonoma - which I didn't want to do.

There wasn't anything obvious about needing to update my Ventura - I had no idea that was available until I followed the prompts you suggested - thanks!

Thanks @PRP_53.

This advice is doubtless the strongest protection, but for me seems confusing, and a little bit scary...

I really just want my Mabook to ask for my regular password whenever it restarts after being manually shut down.

It just seems like that should be the default, always - doesn't that just make sense? What am I missing here?

Sigh.

(But thank you, really, for all the helpful links!)

@PRP_53, thanks re: File Vault - I guess what made me nervous about your suggestion to turn File Vault on was your strong precaution about the "Recovery Key" - ("keeping it in a safe place,; even Apple can't help you," etc) - that's what seemed like the scary extra step, beyond my regular password. There's a limit on how many things I can remember to keep in a safe place! 🤗

You and me both

At this stage and age in life, losing a password and finding a safe place to keep them can be daunting

Let alone remembering where I put them lol
