How can I fix play count discrepancies between my iPhone and iTunes?

I've noticed that the play counts between my Iphone and itunes have gone out of sync or don't update like it used to. I would play a song on my phone and it would update the play count on itunes on my computer but I recently got the 15 plus and when I plugged my new phone into my computer for the first time it asked to trust device and I did like I had with my previous phone but it seems like some settings or something got changed and now something is out of sync. I used to be able to watch the play count go up as the song finished and now it doesn't do that anymore. I've read online to find a fix and attempted a few things but no luck so far.
