Hard drive storage

I have an old Mac with 1TB drive which is 99.35% used. Documents take up 156MB and I have music taking 95GB. I have 20,000 photos but can’t see anywhere how much storage they use however I can’t believe they fill the rest of the drive? I’ve cleaned up the files, deleting old ones and reduced photos by over 5,000 duplicates etc.

I've cleaned up the cache files as far as I can see. Not sure about BLOB files as I’m not sure if they can be deleted but there are hundreds of them.

I have Microsoft office installed but it hasn’t been used much and the files are all covered in the documents volume. Other than that there is little more than the standard applications.

Im thinking about a new MacBook but concerned about transferring everything from my Mac and would I be in the same situation?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

What does Disk Utility > View > Show APFS Snapshots report for the snapshots?

Does Disk Utility report any extra partitions or volumes except the usual System & Data, and boot snapshot?

If all else fails, I'd backup (and make sure I have a bootable external device), erase the whole Intel Mac internal topmost device Disk Utility > View > Show All Devices, do a clean install either from a bootable USB drive or from Internet Recovery, and restore user data files with Time Machine or manually from a Carbon Copy Cloner backup.
