How can I change the default emoji skin tone?

No matter how many times I hover over the emoji to change the skin tone, my phone has not learned the preferred tone. I've searched on the web, but the suggestions don't work for iPhone. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi, Phil. Thanks for your reply. Rereading my message I wasn't completely clear. I already know how to change the skin tone. The problem is that it doesn't default to that after changing it once or twice or 10 times. Every time I go to use the emoji, it's still the yellow version.

Hi, Idris, okay, my fault for using incorrect language. I hover over the yellow emoji and it brings up different colour options. I select the one I want and use it. And I've now done that too many times to count, but it doesn't seem to learn that my selection--not the yellow --is the version I want every time.

Got it!

As noted, my experience with features that are supposed to learn is, well, often disappointing.

That's very strange, because as I said, it should change the emoji to the selected skin tone immediately and leave it at that unless you select a different one.

It even keeps multiple skin tone options available in the "Frequently used" section of the keyboard for the same emoji. Make sure you are tapping not on the yellow one there if its still there, but the more recently used versions. Eventually the other color should fall off the recently used.

In the image below I have 3 different skin toned women and 2 different face palms and 3 different shrugs.

The Emoji itself in the regular location, stays at the last skin tone that was used.

So, I select a different colour option for the emoji. I send the message. No issue with that message. I go to create another message (either that day or another day). When I look for the emoji, I still get presented with the yellow version. My phone isn't learning my other choice, even though over many days, weeks, etc. I keep manually selecting the different-coloured emoji with the apple keyboard. Sigh.

Press and hold on the emoji and it should bring up the skin tone selector if the specific emoji has the option. After you select a specific skin tone, that will be the default option for that emoji the next time you use it and will show that skin tone as the emoji itself. It does not, however, affect other emoji's skin tone selections.

Also, note that not all emoji have skin tone options. Some are just the yellow person or family option.

I don't believe there are any settings to change the default from yellow (or purple). Allegedly, the phone will learn but I think you may have to do more than hover. You may actually need to use the emoji in the desired color. My personal experience with things that are supposed to "learn" is that they are often very slow learners.

That's strange, for me, it changes the emoji immediately to the chosen option and keeps it that way the next time I try to use it. There is no learning time, it changes it immediately, and leaves it there until I choose a different skin tone.

Are you saying the actual emoji you used, returns to the yellow version once you've selected the specific skin tone?

Are maybe using a 3rd party Emoji keyboard? Those may not save the selected skin tone.

The default Apple Emoji Keyboard will immediately save the selected skin tone when you use it.
