Need to move excel and word files created in Microsoft Office 2003 on windows laptop to new imac

You can either use a USB thumb drive and sneaker net it, or hook them up to your network and set up file sharing.

Very simple just put the files on a thumb drive or an external HD that has a file format Mac OS can read. Then drag them from that media into a folder on your Mac and open the files.
Obviously you will need Office 365 on your new iMac if you want to continue using MS Office or you can use the Pages and Numbers apps Apple provides which are free. You can also use third party we based free products such as LibreOffice to open, edit and save the documents.
Additional option: Upload them to iCloud or Google Drive then download them on your Mac.
