Apple Pay not working on my Mac

I found a solution... removing Xcode and changing FileVault's status did nothing for me, and turning on Safe Mode made it work.

Then I realized I had a utility running on my Mac called Quickshade that allows me to dim all the displays I have connected to my Mac at the same time. (It's a software overlay that dims the video output of the entire GUI, but doesn't control the actual display hardware.) Anyway, this overlay appears to remove focus from the Apple Pay popup in any browser.

So when I quit Quickshade, Apple Pay works as expected.

It appears that any utility that messes with the GUI in this way will produce a similar problem.

in my case, i changed the display (resolution) settings to 'more space' and this odd bug disappeared and ApplePay was usable again -> thumbprint icon did not disappear!

OK, let’s check the Apple Pay setting. Please view the image below.

Please make sure the Use Apple ID for Apple Pay feature is enabled. If it is, momentarily disable the switch and then enable the feature again. You may need to be restart your Mac for the feature to take effect.

I think i've figured out the fix. Follow these steps:

1. Open your Mac's System Preferences
2. Scroll to and open the Privacy and Security pane
3. Scroll to FileVault and ensure its enabled and enable it if its not
4. Reboot for good measure and voila Touch ID for paying for things in Safari should be working again

I am on MacOS 15.0 (24A335)

Do you have Touch ID enabled on your keyboard? Is the keyboard an Apple keyboard or third party?

It's was turned on here but was actually worked for me was Turning FileVault Off and then On again. Don't know how these features are connected to each other but this finally resolved the problem for me.

Usually this is related to having a second Apple Pay active. Please try the following.

Create a new user admin account.

Login to new account and try to add a card to the wallet.

Message will appear telling you a user already has an active Apple Pay and do you want to delete it.

Say No and log out of New Account.

Login to original account and try to add a card. If you get an error message please copy and share the exact message.

Do you know how to do a Safe Boot? If not. Please review the information in the Apple support article i linked to below. What country are you in?

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
4. Select a volume.
5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

See if you can add your card. Safe mode prevents third party apps from loading at startup. It could be another app interfering with the process.

Do you use a VPN? That’s a major issue with adding cards to Apple Pay.

..and some days later, the issue showed up again. This time i was using the 'more space' option in 'Display'.

Had to change to the middle position, while the ApplePay-Window was displayed... and the fingerprint icon reappeared and i was able to finish the payment =/

In my case (recent macOS Sequoia on a mac mini m2 pro), the process showed the thumbprint icon correctly again, after changing the display setting to 'more space' (in "system settings" -> "display").

odd: If i chose the setting one notch to the left again, the thumbprint icon wont show up anymore in the apple pay process.

You might want to try updating to the most current Apple/Mac OS version, 14.6.1

Do you have Fingerprint ID enabled in Settings app?

Let’s try the following,

Create a new admin out, then log out of your current account.

Log into the new account and start to add a card. A message should appear about another Apple Pay user. Stop there and cancel trying to add a card.

Log out of new account and log into your old account and start to add a card. A message should appear about removing other users Apple Pay. Say yes delete other Apple Pay.

Restart computer and try to add a card to Apple Wallet.

I'm using Codeium for Xcode, which creates a "floating" window and that seems to be causing the problem. It probably messes with windows' focus and Safari doesn't like it too much, thus disallowing Apple Pay when it doesn't have "full window focus".

While I don't know if this is a bug of any one of the apps, it's an unusual behaviour overall nevertheless. Anyway, it's good to know, thanks for debugging it with me Jeff.
