Apple Pay not working on my Mac

I have a MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5. After filling out all the information in Settings for Wallet & Apple Pay, I am still unable to use Apple Pay at websites in Safari. When I try, a window pops up, and the Touch ID circle briefly appears then disappears. The only active button on that window is Cancel. I also have an iPhone and Apple Pay works fine there. What am I doing wrong?

The problem isn't the ability to add cards to Apple wallet but the ability to use it in Safari.

As others have said that whenever they go to use Apple Pay in Safari it'll show the Apple Pay menu but at the bottom where the touch ID circle is at the bottom it'll say 'processing' then stop without any other prompts or my having pressed on touch ID. After 30 seconds it'll error out saying that it couldn't process the transaction. This is for Apple card and my personal CCs.

I'm having the exact same issue that the original poster describes. It's especially frustrating because there is no actionable error message or even an error code that I can look up. The thumbprint just disappears, but only when trying to use Apple Pay on Safari. Touch ID works fine for logging into the Mac or registering accounts in Safari, which I did just now for this discussion board.

  • Apple Pay works just fine on my phone
  • I'm using the same Apple Pay and iCloud account on all my devices
  • Touch ID works for every other use case on my Mac
  • Touch ID for Safari on my Mac is unusable because the thumbprint icon disappears, forcing me to cancel

This results in Apple Pay being completely unusable on my Mac.

Yes, Touch ID is enabled and I use it frequently. When I click on the Apple Pay icon in order to execute a transaction with a vendor within Safari, a window pops up and the Touch ID icon appears then immediately disappears without waiting for my "touch". The only option I have at that point is to cancel. Of course I can directly put in my credit card information, but then lose the benefits of Apple Pay.

I have tried removing the credit card from the wallet on my Mac, and adding it back again. All that works fine. I just cannot use Apple Pay at any vendor site. No matter what site I try (most recently USPS) I get the popup window, the Apple Pay circle appears and then disappears. I have to cancel out. Do these problems get forwarded to Apple? Is there some other support mechanism to use other than taking the computer in to an Apple Store?

I want to report that I am waiting to hear back from the Apple engineer next Wednesday.

This behavior me wonder if it's a bug. It'll work for about 10 minutes then this behavior will occur.

I have since tried going into safe mode on my MacBook and the behavior persists.

I have observed it also on my wife's MacBook pro (she's the only user) also running macos 15.1.

No, issues in the Apple Support Community generally do not get escalated and Apple Support does not actively monitor the posts and comments.

If you want to escalate the issue, a support ticket needs to be created by either making an appointment at the Genius Bar in an Apple Retail Store or calling Apple Support. However, you need to be proactive if you want the issue raised. A support ticket will have a number. Continually follow up with the number and insist the issue get raised to a higher level. Eventually, if not resolved, it’ll be raised to Enginnering and even higher levels involving third parties etc. Not really the course that needs to be pursued, but a trail of support calls is always beneficial when the issue is persistent and is helpful if a warranty issue arises.

Do you know how to do a Safe Boot? If not. Please review the information in the Apple support article i linked to below. What country are you in?

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Hey everyone,

I think i've figured out the fix. Follow these steps:

  1. Open your Mac's System Preferences
  2. Scroll to and open the Privacy and Security pane
  3. Scroll to FileVault and ensure its enabled and enable it if its not
  4. Reboot for good measure and voila Touch ID for paying for things in Safari should be working again

I am on MacOS 15.0 (24A335)
