What happens when you press Shift 2? If you get " then you probably have the wrong keyboard active. Make sure you have only British and NOT British PC.

Troubleshooting Mac Keyboard:
A. Try the Other shift Key:
Wherever you're located, hold down the other shift key, seeing if that makes all the difference.
B. Boot in Safe Mode:
[Hold Down: shift key, upon boot], In Safe Mode, Login Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install. Start Up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support
C. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:
(Applies to Intel-Based Mac Only): Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for Screen) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM
D. Try an External Mac Keyboard:
Plug in an external Mac keyboard. If you have a much newer Mac, you might need this adapter for a USB-A keyboard: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple
