Is a working SIM card necessary to erase an older iPhone?

I am trying to erase an older iPhone I have through find my devices. When I click on erase for that device all I get is a pending message. Does the phone have to have a working SIM card in it to be erased? I can’t remember if it is an 8 or 11

Since you have apparently retained physical possession of your old phone:

Reset it (which erases everything) and then Remove the resultant Activation Lock.

At this point you’ll have the old phone restored to it’s “Just Out of the Box” condition which you can then repurpose, sell, or recycle.
