A Late 2014 iMac can upgrade as far as Big Sur, and no further. Big Sur is no longer one of the "most recent three" (Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma), and will fall further behind when Apple releases Sequoia later this year.
Apple no longer releases Safari updates for Big Sur – so you might want to download the current version of Firefox.
As long as you use common sense while browsing the internet you should be OK. These documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.
There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs. There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.
Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear. They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware. Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.
There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it. The free version is more than adequate for most users.
Don't click on links in emails from people you don't know or websites you were redirected to. Spammers have come a long way from the African prince who needs help is getting his money out of Africa. AND start a savings fund to get a new Mac, i.e. plan ahead.
you should still get security updates for a long time. but you wont get the latest features. your mac just reached the point in its life cycle where it only get security updates. after the security updates stop, I highly recommend getting a new mac.
Another option is replacing the 2014 with a new Mac Mini and have a HUGE upgrade in speed and possible reliability.
Do some shopping and you will see there are some excellent options available! Also, did you know Apple offers 12 month no interest financing?
Yup you can try this How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
thank you for your advice.
