Blurry dark screen M1 MacBook Pro 14
I ran into a problem that many people complained about, but I didn't see anyone solve it.
The problem was that for many MacBook users, after waking from sleep, the screen stopped displaying a normal image. In a dark room, it was possible to see a blurry black and white image.
However, the MacBook itself was functioning normally: you could connect an external display, keyboard, and mouse and continue working. The official response from Apple's service was disheartening: screen replacement, and in case the warranty had expired, this cost almost half the price of a MacBook.
Guys, I finally fixed it! In my case, it was a software issue! The symptoms were exactly the same, MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro 16 1Tb.
To fix it, you need a second Mac OS device (in my case, it was a MacBook Air M1) and Apple Configurator app.
There are plenty of guides online on how to start MacBooks in DFU mode.
Before proceeding with any procedures, make a backup of your data! (I just uploaded the particularly important folders to Google Drive and didn't bother with Time Machine)
Here’s what worked for me:
- Make sure you have an internet connection
- Download Apple Configurator on the device that will be used for "healing" and open it
- Connect a Type-C to Type-C cable to the healing device (if it's a MacBook, use the port closest to the screen on the left side)
- Connect the same cable to the device that needs fixing
- Connect the charger to the problematic MacBook
- Turn off the problematic MacBook and wait about 5 seconds after the backlight goes off completely
- Press the power button once, and after a second, hold down the following key combination: left control, left command, and right shift + power button. Hold down all 4 keys for 10 seconds, then release all keys except the power button (a connection request may appear on the healing device, accept it)
- Release the power button after another 7-10 seconds (a DFU icon should appear on the screen of the healing device in Apple Configurator)
- Right-click on this large DFU icon and click Restore
- Wait and occasionally monitor: the healing device may request access to the MacBook several times
- Once the OS is downloaded and reinstalled, everything should work.
Steps I tried before but did not help (note that with our issue, an external monitor still works fine):
- Drained the battery to zero (just played on it), left it overnight, then turned it on again
- Started the MacBook in recovery mode and initiated OS reinstallation
- Started the MacBook in recovery mode, wiped the disk using Disk Utility, then created a bootable flash drive with an older Mac OS Monterey on another device (guidance is available on Apple's website), then inserted the flash drive, started the MacBook in recovery mode, selected the flash drive as the source, and installed Mac OS Monterey
- Downloaded Better Display on the MacBook, tried to disable/enable the display, tried different settings, but none of these configurations worked
None of this helped. At first, I thought that I had a Mac mini instead of a MacBook Pro, as the external display was working, but I am quite a persistent type. So, I hope you don't give up either and, in case the warranty has expired, don't immediately take the MacBook for a screen replacement, which will cost you at least 700 dollars. Good luck, guys!
