Serial and imei numbers changed

Last night I went to by a used iPhone 13 promax it was for cheap so I figured I could resell it and make some money. I verified the serial number and it came back to a pro max 13 on apples warranty check and the imei was verified to a promax 13 on imei checker. I matched the box serial and imei numbers to that of which was on the phone under settings then About. On the about page it also said pro max 13 on the third line (the model name) and it won’t let you change it, it’s built in. I get home and the only thing I do is a software update and go to bed. In the morning I’m going to list it for sell and noticed the imei number looked strange. I looked further and imei and imei 2 were changed, they were a completely different number. So was the serial number. The third line from the top, the model name now said iPhone XR. So I check the serial and imei numbers through apple and imei checker and they both come back to an apple XR. How is this possible for someone to change the numbers and model name for a certain amount of time and then for it to change to a totally different phone. I swear it felt like I was drinking again because I had no idea how this could possibly happen. Good thing I had some pictures of the serial number before and I kept the box because the one one the box doesn’t match the one on the phone now. Also when I bought the phone it said it had 1TB of memory and after the switcher I of the numbers the phone then said it only had 64GB. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Just another scam when purchasing used devices from unknown sellers and no way to contact them for a refund. shoeluvr13 shows the most likely way this scam was carried out. There is also another scam going around where a person sells the device, then notifies the cell provider that it has been stolen to collect the insurance money from theft. After that goes through, the device is blacklisted and will never be able to be used again. There are many more:
