crossword entry problem

My MacBook Air has suddenly started working differently when I do Telegraph crosswords on it.

Before, I could enter the answer to a clue on the grid, typing in the whole word whether there were existing letters already on the grid, or not.

Now, suddenly I have to only enter the missing letters for an answer on the grid. My MacBook Air just jumps to the next empty space -

So - for example if the answer is HOUSE - and H-U-E are already entered on the grid, I now have to enter "O" and "S" - as it would not allow me to start with H, and enter H,O,U,S,E

How can I get my MacBook Air to work as it used to? - without defaulting to the next open box on the grid for each entry?

My macOS is Sonoma 14.5
