When my iPhone 6S gets low on battery the touch screen becomes unresponsive. This starts in the bottom left corner and progresses across the lower part and occasionally affects the whole screen. I can usually fix it by powering off the device and restarting.
Any ideas? (To type this I’m having to turn the phone on it’s side because shift and spacebar are not working)

Sounds like the screen digitizer is failing.
Make an appointment at the Apple Store or take the phone to an authorized Apple service shop to let them check and test the phone.

When was the last time that you replaced the battery in your iPhone?
Other than telling you to keep the battery mostly charged at all times, my only other thought is that it is probably time to purchase a new/newer iPhone. Yours is very old.
The battery was replaced less than a year ago and the battery health says it’s capable of 100% charge and is working at peak performance.
I am using about 80GB of the 128GB storage.
