Dolby Vision not working on Netflix and Disney+ on my iPad Pro M4

Dolby vision/HDR works fine with YouTube, it looks amazing.

However, with Netflix and Disney +, it shows the dolby vision icon, but it's definitely not working. There's no specular highlights, no deep contrast. You can tell it's not getting to it's highest nits of brightness (1600 if I remember).

This is really unfortunate as a major selling point was the display.

Not to forget that 4k works with YouTube, and its down scaled. But the 2 other mentioned streaming apps won't allow it. Which I'd assume is moreso down to Netflix and Disney not allowing. But dolby vision not working seems to be an apple issue.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Have you updated your Netflix and Disney+ apps recently? Netflix updated just yesterday. Disney+ updated a little over a week ago. There apps need to support the feature. The same applies for Dolby Vision, it’s supplied in the same data packet to the apps and then to the respective hardware.

Are you running the developer or public beta of iPad OS? If so, you’ll need to revert back to iPad OS 17.x.x. Beta software frequently disables features that you might be expecting.

Sorry, my writing style comes across as angry or confrontational at times. Not my intent at all. 😀 Not many people in the forums use emojis, so I typically don’t. But I certainly can see the need for them at times.

I’ve participated in several of these discussion in the past. In the examples, that members have shared, have been riddled with too many variables to determine the cause(s). The most likely culprits are the apps and beta software. You’ve temporarily excluded those from the discussion.

Displaying a logo, really means nothing. Just saying. Let’s examine several settings on your iPad and you can determine if they affect your image quality. How is the brightness set for your device? Is it set on Automatic or are you manually adjusting screen brightness? How does the screen image quality change if you change the setting at this path,

iPad > Settings > Display & Brightness > scroll down > Advanced > Reference Mode > On.

How does that affect the image quality. Note that you cannot change the screen Brightness when Reference Mode is enabled. Image quality better, worse, same?

How are you doing the comparisons? I want to better understand you setup, so I can attempt to duplicate your experience and correlate it to mine.

Jeff relax, you asked in your previous message "Have you updated your Netflix and Disney+ apps recently".

I've responded by basically saying yes they're up to date.....because I just checked on the app store and Netflix's latest update was 2 days ago (not 1) and Disney's was 1 week ago.

My message explaining I bought it yesterday answers your previous question regarding if the apps are updated.

Both Netflix and Disney show the dolby vision logo.

I'm not querying that buying the ipad yesterday (or any day) should resolve it in not displaying dolby vision (or the way that I want).

I'm answering your question that buying it yesterday resolves the issue whether the apps are up to date, that's it.

Hey no worries, I'm probably showing some frustration myself as I can't get this working and it was the main selling point for me.

I did try having reference mode turned on before. The screen was very dim on Netflix and Disney.

It does seem to be app related, which surprises me when they have been out on ipados for so long.

I did try someone's recommendation of using Firefox's browser as it's better than the apps, I did think it looked a bit better.

I'm at work today so will have to try later tonight.
