MacBook turns on but the screen is blank

Last night I was on a video call on Whatsapp with a friend of mine and all of a sudden the screen went blank.

I knew it didn't shut down and the camera was already on because I could see the green light. Just to make sure I asked my friend if she can see me or not and she said she can see me.

I had no other choice but to turn it off so I went ahead and did that. I held the Touch ID button until it turned off. But after I try to turn it back on, it's still blank.

I went on YouTube and tried basically all the methods that they mentioned. Command + P + R, booting in to safe mode, etc. NOTHING WORKED :(

It turns on. I know that. I hear the chime on the start-up. I enter the password. I use hotkeys to play music. All of that works but I couldn't see anything on my screen. What should I do?

In addition to dwb's excellent comments, I suggest, if you have one available, to temporarily connect an external monitor to your MacBook Air. If it displays the macOS Desktop on this monitor, you would at least know that the the GPU/Logic board on your laptop is functioning. This would narrow down the issue to the laptop's display.

What exact model is your laptop?

try putting a flashlight to the apple logo on the back (if you have an old MacBook) or to the screen. if you see something, your backlight is probably dead and you will most likely need a new screen

I assume you’ve tried using the F2 key to increase brightness and if I’m right you’re next step is to contact AppleCare or make an appointment with the local genius bar. Sounds like you’ve done your due diligence and that you have a hardware issue.

If your Mac is presenting the macOS Desktop when an external display is connected, but not when it's not, then there is a very good chance that the issue is with the laptop's display itself. This would NOT be a software issue.

EDIT:

I connected my laptop to an external monitor and it's working. Maybe it's a software issue? Or maybe there's a issue but not with the display? I know it's hilarious saying this out loud but, I think if I reset my mac, somehow it'll work. And there's a couple of reasons...

1. When this happened I turned off my laptop and turned it back on. I'll say I've restarted my laptop more than 15times now. But when I connected that external monitor, I could see the WhatsApp app was still running. I mean it was closed but I could see that tiny little dot under the app.

2. It was a bit slower too.

3. I couldn't go to the diagnostic mode. After I select the language there was nothing happening.

These are the ones I can remember. Can someone please give me some more replies? Thanks in advance.
