Trackpad hyper-sensitive!

July 2024 - MacBook Air (13 in, Apple M3, 16GB, MacOS 14.5 (23F79), Sonoma)

This laptop has been nothing but glitches since I bought it in April 2024. It buffered constantly, wouldn't open Word Docs (yes, I have Word for Apple) or Previews, and was incredibly slow in general.

Mid July 2024, I backed everything up on an external HD and reset this Mac to factory settings. Now, the hover pointer and trackpad are HYPER sensitive. I've tried setting Trackpad to slow, but it's done nothing to reduce the hyper sensitivity of the hover arrow. Every time I try to scroll through options, it opens several along the way. Looking through a click-through gallery online? It fast-forwards through everything. Oh, P.S., it often refuses to zoom in or out with two-finger pinch, even though settings say it should.

Has anyone else had this issue? I feel like I got a lemon in this $3K laptop. It's not okay.

Try booting into Startup Options screen by holding the power button for a bit longer until the message to hold the power button for Startup Options disappears. See how the Trackpad functions since macOS is not really involved at that point. You can also select the Options item to boot into Recovery Mode which will have more parts of macOS in it.

While in Recovery Mode you can try clearing the NVRAM by launching the Terminal app from the Utilities menu on the menu bar and issue the following command (safe for M-series Macs....you may see a couple of items listed that cannot be deleted due to permissions issue...that is Ok):

nvram -c

Reboot the computer to see if that makes any difference.

You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. The diagnostics probably won't find any issues, but it will also give you another moment to test the Trackpad to deal with the onscreen prompts.

You can try a DFU firmware Revive to see if that makes any difference.

Otherwise you will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop and perform a hardware repair.
