system data taking up too much space

Bought my new MacBook Pro less than 2 months ago and system data is using over 400 GBs of a 500 GB storage! How do I delete the data? Already tried Time Machine; no luck. Using Sonoma 14.5

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.7

"system data" used to be labeled "Other"

Try something like OmniDiskSweeper for a GUI to get a good look at itemized file size and location:

Hey, Leroy,

Thanks for your response to my query! However, I’d already tried all of the remedies that you suggested with no results. Finally, this afternoon, I phoned the Apple help # and spoke to a very helpful agent, Anastasia. It was finally revealed that the 400+ GBs of ‘system data’ was due to ‘library’ mistaking my screenshots for movies. Go figure! All’s well and I would highly recommend that truly stumped MacBook Pro users take advantage of the free service available by phone.
