Can numbers open an .ODS file?

I'm using Sonoma Version 14.5 on a MacBook Air 2024. I'm new to Mac. I'm replace my very old ASUS, and I used Apache Open Office for many years. Apache doesn't have a version for the modern OS versions. Is there a free alternative that is similar to OO?

You should consider using Open Office to save your files as .xlsx (Microsoft Excel). You can File > Open Excel files into Numbers. You often won't see the exact same format but your data and most formulas should import that way into Numbers, where you can pretty things up.

I haven't tried it for a long time but if you want an Office clone then you could try LibreOffice. There are others as well.

The only spreadsheet software for the Mac that is fully compatible with Excel is, of course, Excel itself, which runs well on the Mac.
