Merge vs don’t merge during iCloud setup

Hello,

What is the different between Merge and Don't Merge during iCloud setup? I had to sign out of iCloud on my iPhone and then sign back in. When I signed out, I chose to keep my contacts and other data on my iPhone. When I signed back into iCloud, I clicked "Merge" Contacts, Calendars, etc.

What should I have done instead?

Thanks

Merge takes any data that's on devices and merges it when you sign back in. If you don't select merge, things that are only on your iPhone won't be uploaded to iCloud.

You said you selected "merge". If so, what's done is done and you can't unmerge anything. So, there is no longer any real choice to be made. Again, are you having any problems with the choice you made?

What makes you think you should have done something different? Are you having a problem?

Irony aside, would you please tell me what the "merge" and "don't merge" options do and their use cases?

I have answered that question and will not be repeating myself. Also, "irony" doesn't mean what you seem to think it means. This leads me to believe that English is not your native language. You may want to seek out the Apple Community Forums in other languages and see if one of those is easier for you to understand.
