Accessing backup files on old airport extreme

Hi there. I have an old airport extreme that I no longer use for backing up my computer, but I believe I have some old files stored on it. It currently have it plugged in directly to my MacBook Air, and it has an orange light flashing, but I can't locate the drive on my computer. I do have "Hard Disks" checked in the general finder settings to show on my desktop. Any suggestions how to see/ access what I have stored on this old airport extreme? Thank you.

An AirPort Extreme is a router only.......it has no built in hard drive. If the product that you are calling an AirPort Extreme has a built in hard drive, you have a Time Capsule.


If you are trying to connect a cable from the USB port on the Time Capsule to your Mac, this is not going to work.....since the USB port on the Time Capsule is there only to add another USB drive for additional data storage.


In other words, you can't connect a USB cable from your Mac to the USB port on the Time Capsule and see what is on the hard drive of the Time Capsule.


If you want to try to get at the data on the Time Capsule hard drive, you are going to need to connect the Time Capsule to your existing router using a wired Ethernet cable connection, then reset and reconfigure the Time Capsule to function on the network.


Even if you do this, you may be able to see the backup file on the Time Capsule, but you likely won't be able to see what is inside the file unless you will be using the same Mac that made the backups on the Time Capsule.


We can tell you how to try to do all of this, but we can't offer any assurance that you will be able to do what you ask.

Unfortunately, the message about "Internal Disk Needs Repair" is always a notice that the hard drive inside the Time Capsule is having problems, and has likely failed.


If the data on the Time Capsule hard drive is really valuable, you could try taking the Time Capsule to a data restoration specialist to see if they can retrieve the data, but this type of thing is out of this world expense wise.


It's a real long shot.....and you will lose the data on the Time Capsule hard drive.....but you could try erasing the drive if you want to try to continue using the Time Capsule....to see if that helps.


Click Edit in the status window that you see, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.


Click Erase Disk, then choose the Zero Out Data option, which will take 6-8 hours or so if it works.
