Why does my FaceTime call suddenly have an echo?

I was on a FaceTime call late at night yesterday, when all of a sudden my friends voice started having an echo, but not just a regular echo, an echo that sounded like a man. If you know what the “hacker voice” sounds like, yeah, that’s what the echo was. She was only with her sister, so it wasn’t anyone in the room. I am scared it will happen again, she was scared too. Please help!
