This part of your description sounds like there may not be enough power to drive the transfer. Is the Mac connected to power? Is the iPhone fully charged? Have you tried other ports? A faulty cable can produce the same sort of results, as well.

You should certainly give the Image Capture app, provided by Apple in the Applications folder, to do the transfer instead of Finder-- it often seems more versatile.

Image Capture is an app that many use to download photos from an iPhone to a Photos library on a Mac. It lets you do the choosing and can use it to delete photos from the iPhone once the download is confirmed and complete.

What you can do when you connect you iPhone 15 to your MBP is back up your iPhone as well as other thing, but the interface is more the reverse than what you want. It is geared to moving music, movies etc from the Mac to the iPhone.

I strongly recommend you do not use the Delete After Import option as there have been too many reports for unsuccessful imports and successful deletions. Like the carpenter's adage: measure twice, cut once. In Photos terms "confirm import before deleting originals".
