I don’t know when it started to happen but apparently there is a significant delay after picking call from iPhone on Mac and being able to talk or listen to the caller at all.
This didn’t use to happen at all.
Before making the appointment with apple service I’d like to ask everybody for opinion of how to reduce the lag.

Did you happen to find a solution to this (elsewhere since no responses here)? I have the same issue and it's gotten to the point where I can't answer incoming calls on my Macbook without fear of the caller giving up after many seconds pass without being able to hear me respond.

I called the apple customer service and they told me to put my Mac in safe boot mode. It did the trick somehow but a couple of days later the issue came back.
I didn’t mention but I usually have my non apple headphones connected via jack to the Mac but Beyerdynamic doesn’t have an inbuilt microphone so my speech was coming through Mac microphone.
What I did was I connected to my Mac with AirPods. And the delay was gone.
So I think it was my headphones not having a microphone. But I need further tests to prove my claim.
Thanks so much for the response. Did they mean to boot up in safe mode every time you use your computer? That doesn't seem feasible for daily use of course, so I'm hoping they just mean that this would reset something.
That makes sense about a potential delay in connecting to a mic but I don't think that would be my issue since I simply use the Macbook's speakers and mic. I do have AirPods etc., so I'll have to see whether it appears to be trying to connect to something else regardless. It's ridiculously frustrating regardless!

No, I was told to safe boot Mac one and try if the issue persists in safe mode. It did not. But when booted normally it went without the delay only to return after some time.
