Why does Chrome uninstall on MacBook Air when turned off?

I have a brand new MacBook Air, M3 chip, Sonoma 14.5. I installed Chrome as the default browser but it gets uninstalled when I turn off the laptop. Chrome is used at work, so I need to be using it. Any solutions please?

When you opened the DMG file for the Chrome installer, did you follow the instructions to drag & drop the Chrome app into the Applications folder? If not, then Chrome will disappear because the DMG file will no longer be mounted when rebooting the Mac.

Chrome cannot be uninstalled after powering off your Mac. Most likely it's still installed. To verify that, click on Finder (Smiley face icon in your Dock) > select "Applications" in the left sidebar > then locate Chrome on the right hand side of the window. If it's listed there, then it's still installed on your Mac.

Once you confirm that Chrome is installed on your Mac, just follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll down on the right and locate "Default web browser" > then click on the drop down option and choose "Chrome"

That'll set the default web browser to Chrome for you.

Hope that works!

Most likely it's either an issue within the user account or the software. You can restart the Mac in safe mode, as this helps to clear out the caches in the operating system. Once you go in safe mode under your user account, simply restart the Mac again to exit out of safe mode.

Then, download Chrome on the Google website and follow the suggested steps again to make it the default web browser.

Here's the steps on safe mode:

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

If that doesn't help, you can reinstall a fresh brand new copy of macOS Sonoma 14.5 by going into macOS Recovery. This will not delete your data, but it's always recommended to ensure you have a backup on an external hard drive just in case. To reinstall macOS Sonoma 14.5, you can follow this article on Apple's website: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Just make sure that you follow the section specific to Apple Silicon, as that's the processor you have for your MacBook Air M3.

Best of luck!

Thank you. But, no, it disappears. I couldn't find it using the Finder, and when I go to the Dock to set the default web browser, only Safari shows up as the option. I actually again downloaded Chrome and chose it as the default browser. But when I restarted the computer, it again has vanished, and Safari is back as the default browser. Not sure what else to do. May just return this laptop.
