I have an older iMac and love the screen size and would like to use it with a more modern mac mini. Is this possible and with what cable and configuration? I am happy to convert the iMac into a dumb display as I do not need to use it's database after I get the mini.
Those Mac’s are too new and do not support the old Target Display Mode cabled connection.

To use the iMac as a display, you will need to use a slower network connection like Screen Sharing, LunaDisplay or DuetDisplay.
Plus if you get a Mac mini, you will also need an external display to setup the Mac mini in order to use the iMac as a second display.

My old 27" iMac is still wonderful in every way except won't update software and is getting very slow in some ways. Wish I could just update the hardware in it.
Sadly hardware upgrades will not help or allow for later macOS updates.
Might have to get over my snit with Apple's trade in policy and buy a whole new system.
Or repurpose for another user and/or use.
