The ear buds paired right away on my apple phone but won't pair on my ipad

Thank you. Maybe you can help me with another problem. I can't get my apple pencil to pair with my iPad. It gives me the option to pair but doesn't show "pencil" as paired. Yesterday "pencil" showed paired but then went away. ???
