Apple were not helpful but here is a work around:

Instead of "Message *NAME* on Whatsapp," say

"Message *NAME* mobile on Whatsapp."

For some reason, because I have saved the contact number with the "mobile" tag, Siri suddenly needs that clarification. Unsure if this is a Whatsapp issue or Apple with the latest update, or both.

The workaround mentioned by others—saying "mobile" after the contact's name—seems to work for most people. Here's what I'd recommend trying:

  1. Use "Mobile" After the Contact's Name: When asking Siri to message someone on WhatsApp, try saying "Message [Contact Name] mobile on WhatsApp." It appears that Siri needs this clarification when the contact's number is labeled as "mobile."
  2. Update WhatsApp and iOS: Make sure both iOS and WhatsApp are updated to the latest versions. There was a recent WhatsApp update that addressed some Siri-related issues, so updating might fix the problem.
  3. Reconfigure Siri & Search Settings: Go to Settings > Siri & Search, then find WhatsApp in the app list. Make sure that Siri & Suggestions are enabled for WhatsApp.
  4. Restart and Reinstall: If the issue persists, try restarting your iPhone and reinstalling WhatsApp. Uninstalling and reinstalling sometimes helps to refresh any configurations between the app and Siri.

It's frustrating that this wasn't an issue in earlier versions, but it seems to be related to recent updates. Hopefully, Apple and WhatsApp will issue a fix soon. In the meantime, using the workaround should help in most cases.

Hello. I just wanted to say a huge thank you to this group. Over the last few days I have not been able to say "Hey Siri, call blah blah on WhatsApp". Then I read here a temporary workaround "Hey Siri, call blah blah mobile on WhatsApp". That was great. But the best news came when someone here suggested that I go to the App Store, look up WhatsApp where a button will appear, saying "Update". I did that, and was slightly disappointed to discover it didn't work, until I realised the old, old thing to do when you update anything; restart your phone. I restarted my phone and bingo! It's all working just as it was before. So thank you everybody!

I’ve found it works if I say the full detail including device “Hey Siri, WhatsApp call Mum mobile” This will work, as opposed to “Hey Siri, WhatsApp call Mum” which only ends in misery and frustration. I’ve tried this with people who don’t have landlines saved in my phone and it still works. Never used to be a problem but hopefully this works for others too.

I also started having  problems making calls with WhatsApp with my iPhone 14 Pro after iOS 17.6.1 update.

So I Tried Lrich2424 suggestion for messages and it worked.

So I figured the magical word here is *mobile*, and any combination with the words, *mobile, WhatsApp, and video*, pretty much in any order, allows Siri to make video calls.

Leaving the word *video* out will cause WhatsApp to make an audio call.

So that to make video calls, I was able to make it work using some of the following phrases:

Make a WhatsApp video call to *NAME* mobile (or simply, WhatsApp video call to *NAME* mobile)

Call *NAME* mobile video WhatsApp

Video call *NAME* mobile WhatsApp

In fact,  leaving the verbs out  worked as well:

*NAME* mobile video WhatsApp

Or

Mobile video *NAME* WhatsApp

Crazy! It became a lot wordier than how it used to work!

And also strange that Siri understands if I say “mobile” but not if I use “iPhone”, instead.

For Audio calls, it works with:

WhatsApp call  *NAME* mobile
