Apple TV 3 - Very Slow

Of late ATV3 has generally run quite slow. This is specific to the ATV3 as network the same and all else runs fine. Including an ATV 4K on same network, which is unaffected.

In example, on consecutive nights on attempting to watch a purchased TV program indication that it will take one hour and thirty minutes to play on ATV3. In then switching over to ATV 4K the same program begins playing immediately. Network download speeds were sufficient; check one night indicated 49.40 Mbps.

I have discussed this issue with Apple a number of times. One initial suggestion was to bring ATV3 in for service at my expense. But as I have two identical indicating same issue, not likely the hardware. The best they could eventually suggest is that the ATV 4K is better at decoding and thus faster. No doubt. But unlikely at a factor of over an hour difference.

This slow performance is across the spectrum and affects everything watched on ATV3, including streaming from third parties such as Amazon.

Perhaps coincidence, but generally after I have contacted Apple in this regard the problem largely ends; programs that previously indicated over an hour to load then load near instantly. This state tends to last for several weeks, maybe a month or so, then all begins to slow again.

Would also note that prior to the advent of ATV 4K, ATV3 did not suffer such issues.

You indicate the network download speed but nothing about the network coverage in the room the Apple TV is located in. This coverage is called bandwidth and could be your problem. You will need a testing app such as iStumbler to test the bandwidth coverage throughout the house, if you find the coverage is lacking in the room the problem Apple TV is located in then you may be a candidate to upgrade your network.

Good candidates are:

  • multi story home (including basement space)
  • homes 1250 sq. ft. or larger.
  • construction material made of steel or concrete in the walls and/or roofs.
  • have home 10 networking devices (Apple TVs, computers, smart phone, Alexa devices, smart home devices, etc....)

If your home fits into one or more on the list able, you sound like a great candidate for a Mesh network. If somehow you are not familiar with a Mesh network, just Google the term to learn what it is. You can find mesh networks all over now, including Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, local office supply store etc.

Thank you for your reply.

Believe the network is not the issue in this case. Both the ATV3 and ATV 4K are in close proximity to each other, both using the same network; switching between them can reveal an indicated time of well over an hour for the ATV3 but the same program instantly playing on the ATV 4K.

Moreover, while the ATV3 is perfectly capable of near instant play, there are periods, such as the last week or so, when it alone is being significantly slowed down.
