Can I add things to the sidebar in Pages?

New to Pages. I've always used Word. Word is running frustratingly slow lately and I can't figure it out after several days. Trying Pages out. Pages seems to be more difficult to use and more steps involved for simple tasks (ie changing a highlight color). Can I add things to the sidebar?

You cannot add things to the Pages sidebar. Pages is not a Word clone so a great many features in Word are simply not in Pages. Entirely different applications and design goal.

Apple has this misguided notion that a Highlight is what one sets from the Insert menu, but in reality and in the spirit of an industry standard, the true text highlight is hidden in the more text options menu:

as the Text Background item. Apple seems opposed to making this easier to access like on the main Format > Text panel such as directly below Text Color.

I also have Office 2021 Home and Business for Mac installed and Word v16.87 has better performance than Pages v14.1 on my Sonoma 14.5 system.
