My subscription finished yesterday 28/07/2024 and I still can’t downgrade, seems like apple are trying to scam another month out of me very very very frustrating to the point of swearing my head off

You can downgrade at any time, so what happens when you choose the 6GB free option?. If you started a free trial, then that must be cancelled at least 24 hours before the subscription period ends to avoid a charge, although you can still use the service until the trial period ends. Downgrade to the free 5GB plan and you will not be charged for iCloud after that subscription ends. If you are subscribed to Apple One, then that includes the 50GB iCloud storage, so you may want to consider cancelling Apple One and just keep the services that you want.

Properly Downgrading iCloud:
1. Download All of iCloud, First:

2. Downgrade your iCloud Plan:
If you want to get less storage in iCloud, downgrading your iCloud plan is the way to go. Note that this has a monthly fee. Here is the link to user: iCloud+ Plans and Pricing - Apple Support. Note that this service is not available in all countries/regions.
