As the setting is already set to ON, Siri should respond while the iPad is locked.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Assuming that you have an iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPad, while a factory restore is intended to fully erase and reset the device, you won't lose anything.

The reason that you have a backup is to be able to restore your files, photos and other data - and the majority of device settings - should the need arise.

Be aware that unless a Passcode is set, much of your iPad's advanced functionality will be inhibited.

Thanks for your detailed input!

At the time of my prior comments I did not have a passcode (I never take the iPad away from home). And I've noticed another issue... alert upon receiving new text messages are not playing when the iPad is closed (they do play when it's open). For whatever reason I added a passcode. I checked the 'Allow Siri when locked' setting and it was not greyed-out anymore; I switched it off then back on but it still didn't work. I turned it off, shut down the iPad and restarted it, then turned the setting back on; still no luck. So I tried the 'Forced restart' and 'Reset' options as you described above; no luck. I have not yet tried the 'Restore to Factory Settings' as I'm a little worried... will I lose everything - all my apps, photos, music, icons and groups on my home screens, etc.?

Good grief, I sure didn't expect these issues with a brand-spanking-new device!

Thanks,

Ken

Since I've been using the Passcode I've had fewer problems although my original issue, Siri responding when the case is closed, is still not working. Regarding the factory reset, I didn't realize that an iCloud backup included apps, settings, etc. which I was concerned about rather than only data so that's comforting. Regardless, I'll try the other support options before I resort to that. Thanks again for all your help.
