My iPhone read receipts are turned off but still sending read receipts. I have confirmed that the setting is indeed turned off in the Message on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Is there a bug causing the iPhone to ignore my settings?
I am using iOS 17.5.1.

Problem solved. Read receipts were turned on for that contact. When that happens they still receive them, even when you turned them off in the app.

In these screenshots you can see that I have messages set not to send read receipts, but it is doing it anyway.
Assuming that screenshot is from YOUR phone, it indicates that the recipient has “Read Receipts” enabled.
