Adding a time Machine network drive

I have a Buffalo LS 210 D network drive connected to my router. This is setup using NAS Navigator 2.

The drive appears in my Finder window, but when I try and add it as the backup drive, the message says 'No Available Time Machine Destinations.

Not sure how to go about setting this up for backups.

Here’s an outline of my network setup and the issue I’m facing: My NAS is connected via Ethernet to a common router. My Google WiFi is also connected to the same router, and my MacBook connects wirelessly through Google WiFi. I can successfully connect to the NAS from my MacBook using SMB with its IP address, so the connection between the devices seems fine. However, when attempting to perform a Time Machine backup, I receive the error: “The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk.” If I bypass Google WiFi and connect my MacBook directly to the common router (where the NAS is connected), Time Machine backups work properly. Due to noise concerns, I would prefer not to relocate the NAS closer to the Google WiFi unit. Can anyone suggest why Time Machine can’t find the backup disk, even though SMB connections are working? Are there specific network settings or adjustments that could resolve this issue? Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Time Machine won't allow the selection of a network disk as a backup destination. Sonoma 14.1.2 (23B92); Mac mini M2. Running Ubuntu/Samba/netatalk on Raspberry pi; can connect to server and access shared volumes; it's just that time machine won't backup to the mounted network drive. Regards, Jerry

Time Machine, Time Capsule, NAS, & TP-Link...The Rollercoaster Compatibility Saga It's been a saga lately trying to get Time Machine to work in 2025 with various generations of Mac computers. The whole Journaled to APFS migration is throwing a wrench into the backup agenda. Time Capsule doesn't speak APFS...so that makes it less than favorable as a viable option for newer machines. Similarly they don't recognize APFS USB drives either. So with Time Capsule running its course with modern devices, a natural evolution would be local USB hard drives or NAS storage solution. Since our house uses multiple machines, I am working on configuring a NAS setup. But, TP-Link doesn't speak APFS. That being said, does anyone have a router solution that speaks APFS? Similarly, I am wondering if an APFS machine can backup to a NAS drive formatted as Journaled. Thank you.
