Recents folder not showing Recently opened files

i accidentally sorted my recents folder the other day and it stopped showing recently opened files like it used to. I've searched the internet everywhere for a solution but can't find one. If i sort it to "Date Last Opened" it shows files that i haven't even opened. When i click on the apple menu and click recent items, thats what i should see in recents rather than all my files in one folder (recents).

Can somebody help me with this?

It's not clear to me which "Recents" you are having trouble with. Do you see what you expect to see in Apple>Recents? If not, I'd clear the menu and let it repopulate.

If you mean the "Recents" folder, did you check to make sure that you didn't have the "Date Last Opened" column sorted oldest first? Also, try clicking on the three little dots in the circle at the top of the folder and making sure that "Use Groups" is unchecked. If it's unchecked, try checking it.
