How to reset and reassign AirTag with Apple ID?

I purchased a 4-pack of AirTags. I assigned all 4 to different items. 1 item was sold so i disconnected that AirTag from the item and from my Apple ID. It sat around for a year before I found another use. I replaced the battery and performed a reset. When I try to assign it to my new item, I get a message that this AirTag is already assigned to another Apple ID. I have never changed my Apple ID. It has only ever belonged to me. It has only been assigned to my Apple ID for a previous item. I don’t get it. This AirTag is useless now. Please help me. Thank you!

Just to be sure. Are you still using the same iPhone that you paired all of these tags to, and still use the same Apple ID?

If so, then when you unpaired this particular tag from your Apple ID, could it be possible that at one point it may not have been in your possession and someone else managed to pair it to their ID? If you are sure that never happened, then it may be possible that this tag is now defective.

I followed the instructions from the link provided and the air tag sound never changed to a differernt tune as described. It always plays the same tune after multiple attempts with a new battery to reset it. It still shows up as attached to another apple ID even though this air tag has never been shared. This air tag has always been in my possession or assigned to one of my own items. Is there anything else I can do to get it back?
