White noise occuring in right Airpod

When put the L airpod no problem then when I put the R airpod in an intermittent "white noise" keeps happening - can stop it if I move the airpod ot sometimes tap it but it keeps recurring. If I take the R airpod out the left works normally and this is what I now have to do to use the airpods i.e. use just the the L one alone.
