have just purchased and have been trying to send messages to non Ipad users. is there something that i have to tick/or click to make it work. i need it set out simply so that i can follow thru with the instructions. i have to say that it is very frustrating to say the least. hope someone can help. thanks Gmajune.

In order to send an SMS message from an iPad, you need to connect it to your iPhone and both devices need to be using the same Apple ID. On the iPhone, go to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and select your iPad. See here for further information:

If you do not have an iPhone, there is no way to send an SMS from an iPad.

As iPads have no native ability to send SMS or MMS, there is no such setting on an iPad.
And, even on an iPhone, there is no setting to enable or disable SMS. That can only be done by the carrier. You're probably thinking of Settings>Messages>Send as SMS. That setting only affects iMessages that have failed. You can demonstrate this for yourself by turning it off and then sending an SMS.
