Why has BBC iPlayer has stopped working on my MacBook Air?

iPlayer has stopped working on my MacBook Air, currently running OS Catalina version 10.15.7. The symptoms are; iPlayer loads but when I click on the play icon to play a programme, I just get a whirring symbol, and the programme will not launch. It started doing this only a couple of days ago and I haven't changed anything. Anyone else had the same problem and found a solution?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

The BBC discontinued the iPlayer app on Mac & Windows back in March. For Mac & Windows computers they recommend streaming via their website https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer The mobile iPlayer app still works.

Sometimes, a website doesn't work properly because of a problem with its cookies or cached parts. It's worth trying it in "private" or "incognito" mode:

  • In Safari, click the File menu > New Private Window.
  • In Chrome, click the File menu > New Incognito Window.

In this new window, try iPlayer again. If it now works, chances are the problem was related to cookies or cache. You'll now want to solve this by clearing the cookies and cache.

Note: You'll be logged out of any website accounts you use. In other words, next time you visit those sites you’ll need your password.

Safari

  1. Click the Safari menu (top left of the screen).
  2. Choose Clear History.
  3. Set the time range to: All History.
  4. Click Clear History.

Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu (top left of the screen).
  2. Choose Delete Browsing Data.
  3. Set the time range to: All time.
  4. Tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  5. Click Delete Data.
