My computer has fallen from a desk flat on the floor and the screen has cracked causing several cracks to the corner of the screen but has now extended across the screen. Can the screen alone be replaced?

From service site photos, the glass and the display element are one unit as in all iMacs since 2012. You are not just replacing glass but the entire unit. If you do not have Apple accidental damage insurance, the cost to fix could be quite high. Only Apple can tell you how much; expect to be shocked.
Homeowners'/renters' insurance ofter covers damage to your tech, but those policies usually have a US$500 deductible and that is probably close to the cost of a new display, based on the costs for a display replacement in 2012-2019 iMacs

You will need to schedule a service appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP.

I have been into a store today and it’s £638 for the screen alone 🫣
Keep Allan Jones's suggestion of contacting your home owner's insurance company as a couple of other users who check to see what a 24" cracked screen replacement would cost reported $700. You could still get some help on the repair depending on your deductible.
The other users didn't want to pay that amount so opted for a 3rd party 27" monitor to use and darkened the built in cracked screen.
Just some food for thought.
If you purchased AppleCare + that damage would have been covered for <$100. It may make more sense to just replace the computer, you can decide when you get the estimate though.
