New iPad slow response time

Had an old iPad Air 4th Gen, 64GB. Was taking forever to toggle back and forth between files saved in my "Files" app and save pdfs to same app. Figured it was because there was just too much data, so upgraded to 5th Gen, 128GB, but still having the same problem. I'll click on a document and it will take forever to open on my screen. Same with trying to toggle back and forth between different folders within the Files app. Had not been an issue until the past two months or so.

I've cleared the Safari cache, disabled background app refresh, removed unused apps, and deleted large files. Nothing seems to help.

Any solutions?

iPad Air, iPadOS 17

If your iPad is not performing as expected, try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Are you using Split View to provide multiple windows to handle multiple documents simultaneously?

Assuming all your files are stored locally, perhaps a restore would help better organize your iPad’s storage. I’m a computer programmer going back years to the disk drive days, and back then a restore was a tremendous asset to address fragmented files on a disk.

What are the steps you’re doing exactly? What does “toggle …” mean precisely?

For example, do you mean something like the following, all performed within the Files app:

  • Open File A (which is perhaps a Pages file)
  • Open File B (which is perhaps a Numbers file)
  • Save PDF of File A
  • Open File C (which is perhaps a Keynote file)
  • Save PDF of File B
  • Close File A
  • etc.

All of the documents are similar--case law documents in pdf downloaded from Westlaw or Word documents I've converted to pdf so I can make notes on them. I have about 15 or more of these kinds of folders within the Files app, each one with multiple pdfs. I'll open one, write notes on it, open another, write notes on it, open a third, write notes on that too. And then I'd have no problem moving back and forth between the open documents, or even opening more. Now, it takes a while for the first document to pop up. And occasionally, while writing notes on a doc, it will just reset and everything I'd written disappears.

This only happens with the Files app. There are otherwise no problems with the device at all.
