When I try to text a non-iPhone user, their name now turns red rather than green. This seemed to start after the upgrade to IOS 17.5. I have verified that texting from my iPad is turned on in my iPhone, and I am using the Cloud to backup messages on both devices. This is not a problem on the iPhone. The upgrade to 17.6 does not seem to have helped. I can see the texts I've sent from my iPhone, just can't send from iPad.

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID - to send SMS/MMS messages (green bubbles) from your iPad you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your iPad on your iPhone...
On your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices.
Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:
Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON

Thanks, Sberman. It is a good article, but everything was already set. The toggling on and off seemed to work eventually - I had to do it a couple of times.
thanks for this answer, LotisPilot. I had seen your answer to a similar question from last year, tried everything you had suggested, but everything was already set as you described. I updated to the new security patch, but it did not seem to help. Then I did change one thing on the iCloud Messages setting, which seemed to jog something back into place, and now it is working. I greatly appreciate your response.
