Apple Watch 9 does not notify when Iphone 14 Pro is left behind

A previous watch would buzz on my wrist to notify me that a previous phone was left behind - at home, in a store, etc.

My current watch does not notify - I've checked the watch app, the find me app, they've checked it at the Apple Store, and I've been on a call with an Apple rep (who wasn't familiar with this option, had to read from the manual) and found no problems with either device.

Any ideas to fix this would be appreciated - it's a helpful thing!

Update - I returned to the Apple Store and they set a phone appt w Apple, saying it could have to do w my Apple ID account and they couldn’t work w that at the store.

So they called, and although the tech seemed to not be familiar with the “left behind” function (she was clearly reading from a manual) she finally determined that while my watch was updated, my phone was not. So I ran an update and then tested the function by leaving my phone at home - and it worked! I was quite a bit further away than I had been previously, but I did get notified my phone was left behind, near home.

seems like the Apple Store geniuses should have checked for updates, but at least I seem to have figured it out!

Open Find My on your iPhone. Go to “Devices” on the bottom, then tap this iPhone. “Notify When Left Behind” should be on and say “Enabled for your Apple Watch”. Also tap that row and note excluded locations.
