Why can't I change the contact photo for a contact? iPhone 13 - iOS 17.5.1

My iPhone 13 refuses to cooperate... all I'm trying to do is add a photo for a contact so when I receive a message or a call from that person, it has my photo of them. My iPhone seems to have a mind of it's own, as in, my wife's iPhone 11 is running the same system (17.5.1) as mine but her procedure for adding or changing a contact's photo is 100% different from mine. She keeps trying to show me how to do it but for some reason my iPhone contact menus don't look anything like hers! Hers is very straight forward, mine is not and neither one of us can figure out what is wrong or why the 2 menus systems are so totally different. Google is no help either. What could be going on here? Help!! Genius Bar is next!
