Selecting individual songs to sync as opposed to Albums, Artists or Genres

I'm having a difficult time identifying a streamlined way to select individual songs in Songs when uploading to my iPhone. Sometimes I don't want the whole Album or the Artist's œuvre. HELP! I loved being able just to click and drag from my Library onto my iPhone.

Create a playlist in Music and drag those single songs into it. When you sync, use "sync selected playlists" and make sure that new one is included.
