Double clicking the mouse doesn't work to open my iMac desktop folders

I go to open my desktop folders this PM by double clicking the mouse - doesn't work. It worked fine this AM, but now the feature is defunct --- I know Apple hates me because of what I say about them. I google a query about this problem and find responses to this problem that go back to 2007 - I know Apple is continually devolving hence the leap back 17 years (back to the future anyone?). Anyone have a SIMPLE solution to fix this that a less than stellar tech user can navigate?

Slamming Apple while providing absolutely no relevant information that could be used to troubleshoot your problem, in fact, not even bothering to actually describe the problem beyond vague ramblings, is not a good way to entice the people on this forum into helping you.
