Apple Photos does not recognize JPEG and raw files from my Canon EOS R3

The Canon EOS R3 Raw format is supported on Sonoma. Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma and visionOS - Apple Support (IN)

In what way are the photos not recognized? Are you seeing white thumbnails in Photos or exclamation points on the thumbnails? Or is it not possible to to import them from the card?

If you cannot import photos to Photos on Sonoma, your Photos Library may be stored in an unsupported location. Is your Photos Library on an external drive? Then check the file system format on this drive. Phots on Sonoma can only import to a library, if the file system format is either APFS or MacOS Extended (Journaled), see: Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Earlier system versions did not give a warning, when the Photos Library has been on a drive with an unsupported filesystem format, where the library might get damaged, but Sonoma will refuse to import to such a library to protect our photos from damage.

Can you export the photos with the white thumbnails? It looks like the originals are missing.

• Try to select one of the white thumbnails and use "File > Export > Export unmodified original".

Can Photos save one of the originals on your Desktop? Can you open the exported file in Preview?

Have you tried loading the files into Finder folders first? Then you can more cleanly check to see if they are OK or what might have happened. Perhaps you can import them to Photos from Finder.

With my Nikon I always transfer the jpegs and RAW files to Finder folders first for an additional backup. Then I import them to Photos.

Where is your Photos Library stored? On an external drive or in your Pictures folder?

If on an external drive, how is the drive connected and what is the file system format?
